Turkey stood out from the rest of Europe by not ordering a legal lockdown until April 2021, when the country enacted its first nationwide restrictions. The first death due to COVID-19 in the country occurred on 15 March. The first case in Turkey was recorded on 11 March, when a local returned home from a trip to Europe. Individuals considering travelling for treatment should discuss their plans carefully with their UK doctor, dentist and/or hospital specialist before committing to any procedure abroad. We are aware of 22 British nationals who have died in Turkey since January 2019 following medical tourism visits. As such, British nationals considering undertaking medical treatment in Turkey should carry out their own research it is unwise to rely upon private companies that have a financial interest in arranging your medical treatment abroad. The standard of medical facilities and available treatments vary widely around the world. Cosmetic surgery, dental procedures and cardiac surgery are the most common procedures that medical tourists undertake. The term ‘medical tourism’ refers to those tourists who have chosen to have medical/surgical/dental treatment abroad. You should check whether your health insurance policy includes coverage for COVID-19. Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation. ![]() The European Health Insurance Card ( EHIC) and Global Health Insurance card ( GHIC) are not valid in Turkey. You should contact your insurance/medical assistance company promptly if you are referred to a medical facility for treatment.
